The New Health Sciences Library & a discussion of library classroom design

The new Library:

• A physical and digital knowledge hub in state-of-the art $35 million signature building reflecting Colorado’s environment
• Located at the crossroads of the Fitzsimons/Anschutz Medical Campus, one-half block from forthcoming light rail station, where campus, biotech park and town center/commercial district meet
• Double the size of the old library at nearly 113,000 square feet
• Concrete construction for quiet building, sturdy enough to bear load of over 215,000 print journal and book volumes
• Melds collaborative workspaces and comfortable quiet study areas, with thirty group study rooms optimally located throughout to reflect/support small group learning
• User-friendly building with ample natural light, café, gallery, patios, reading and meeting rooms
• Wireless everywhere to support advanced mobile computing and communication technologies
• First floor “Information Commons” with 47 workstations connected to campus network
• A single service desk. Ask your questions here; yes, even Reference questions. Check out reserves and other resources here too.
• 24,000 linear feet of shelving on 2nd and 3rd floors
• High-tech hands-on teaching, informatics and visualization labs
• High-tech fire suppression feature in rare book area; unique collection valued at over $2 million including 1859 first edition Darwin, 1546 Vesalius
• Gallery space to host local and traveling exhibits: first will be “Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians” from National Library of Medicine and American Library Association
• Uses “green” building materials and concepts where feasible/affordable

12:15pm    Lunch and Brief Introductions: Name & institution
1:00pm     Presentation and Discussion on Teaching Lab design and construction
        (what we like and don't like now that we're finally here!)
        Instruction facilities at your place -- what do you like? what would you do differently?
2:30pm     Location and dates for next CoLIG meeting -- Volunteers? August?

LOCATION: the Health Sciences Library is located at 12950 Montview Blvd., Aurora Colorado, east of the intersection of Montview and Peoria.
The Library's entrance is on the west side of the building. The Teaching Labs are at the North end of the first floor.

DIRECTIONS: Directions to the library and to parking can be found at http://hsclibrary.uchsc.edu/about/directions.php
Take I70 to the Peoria exit, then go south on Peoria to Montview. Go east on Montview to Uvalda, and park in the Georgetown or Ignacio lots.
Take I225 to the Colfax exit, go west on Colfax and turn north on Fitzsimons Parkway, turn west on Montview to Uvalda and park in the Georgetown or Ignacio lots.

Ignacio Lot is closest to the library, but often full, so Georgetown is often a better choice.
Parking is $1/hour, just look for the parking machine and follow the instructions. Remember to put the parking receipt on your dashboard.

LUNCH: If you don't want to buy lunch at the Library's cafe, see http://snipurl.com/203st for lunch suggestions. There are several other restaurants and cafeterias within walking distance or on the drive into campus where you can pick up a lunch to go and bring it to the Library.
